Trial of a New South Wales Man Accused of Murdering a Vulnerable Gambling Dependent Individual
In the NSW Supreme Court at Wollongong, the trial for Stephen Staff, an Australian man, is currently underway. The case revolves around the death of Matthew Davis, a 31-year-old man who passed away on August 21, 2021, due to a fatal bashing and choking in his home in Lake Illawarra.
According to the prosecution, CCTV footage shows three men heading towards Davis' house on the night of the tragic incident. The final man, believed to be Staff, was seen carrying a heavy plastic bag, which is believed to have contained Davis' valuables.
The prosecution suggests that Staff and the two other men may have assaulted Davis over alleged debts. This theory is supported by the fact that Staff took Davis' mobile phone, laptop, gaming console, and modem from his home. However, it's important to note that the involvement of Stephen Staff in the assault and theft of Davis' valuables remains unverified, as no specific or direct sources have confirmed these facts.
During the trial, Staff's lawyer has claimed that he did not participate in the fatal bashing. In addition, the lawyer suggested that Staff had tried to help his beaten friend after the bashing.
The prosecution's theory is further strengthened by DNA analysis, which confirmed Staff's presence at Davis' home. Specifically, Staff's DNA was found on Davis' body and hood.
It's also worth noting that Davis suffered from chronic asthma and was too sickly to work. Prior to his death, he had asked his grandmother for AUD 900 to pay off a gambling debt, but he never collected it. According to the prosecution, Staff later told his family in recorded calls from prison that he and the other men were at Davis' home to "give him a touch-up."
Two of the three men returned 15 minutes later, while the final man, believed to be Staff, remained at the house for five hours before leaving.
The trial is ongoing, and the public will continue to follow the developments closely. It's a tragic case that has left the community in shock, and we hope for justice to be served.
